Hmmm... makes me even more suspicious that I might have a failing hard drive in there.

It may be time to run Micromat's TechTool Pro on that machine.
http://www.micromat.com/ Either version 3 or 4 should do the job for the G3
hardware. But version 4 is "built from the ground up for Mac OS X" and
would be better in the future for OS X files.
I used to use the freebie TechTools Lite for Rebuilding the Desktop in OS 8 and 9. I don't own the Pro version. I was going to inquire as to programs that can test your hard drive for serious problems. Can TechTools Pro do that? (Guess I can go over to Micromat's web site and read for myself) Anybody have any other program suggestions for checking the integrity of a hard drive.
I ran RAMometer in OS 9 to check the RAM sticks. I used what is commonly called the "RAM sandwich" method, so I know my RAM is good.
It would be a shame to buy a new drive if a utility can fix a few bad blocks. Oh, have you run First Aid from the Disk Utility?
Disk First Aid did not find anything wrong with the drive. Disk Warrior did fix some things, but nothing serious. I am having problems with Disk Utility. I get a panic when I try to repair permissions.
BTW, I'm archiving this thread for future reference.
If you want the whole ugly story, my first post about problems with this machine was on January 23, 2003 "Panther & Desktop Rebuild problem/question."
