On the question of audio editing, a friend of mine and I have taken several albums and played them from the phonograph to the line in(sound card) and edited with various free download softwares. MusicMatch finally worked for going from WAV to Mp3 and back. Of course it was a PC that we started this with as we are more recent Mac swithches.
There are freewares around to download for the Macs and that's where we are going next. We have several Macs to experiment with. My G3/300 DT beige being the latest addition. You mentioned your recent purchase of a G3 on eBay. Look on the back and see if it has a "Wings" AV import card like this one. These are often referred to as "Prersonality" cards. They are kind of quirky and from what I've read and heard Macintosh didn't liscense these for third party software producers..so they were a bit of a disappointment. They go on eBay like this one from $20 to $60 bucks quite often. Check this one out: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2785342916&category=25449&sspagename=STRK%3AMEBWA%3AIT&rd=1 Does your G3 have anything like this on the back? By the way...what does your G3 system consist of? Is it a 233, 266, 300 DT or MT with 300+Mhz? Hd space, memory? If it doesn't have the Wings card the standard card will do for recording albums but you will still need a burner. We have several burners and burnt the Mp3'files with one burner to start with and the CD would play on most of the CD playing devices in the house and cars. Two of the stero's wouldn't recognize the CD however. We made a copy of that disk on on a HP burner and it was recognized by all the stero's.(go figure) Here are some freeware downloads you may wish to look at. I have Audacity on my IBM PC and it was highly recommended to me. It's the fourth one down in the page of this link for Audacity: http://www.webattack.com/Freeware/gmm/fwaudioedit.shtml Audacity doesn't come with a Mp3 function due to patent royalty considerations. Audacity recommends going to "lame" and d/l a copy of lame for the pc or "lamelib" for the Mac AIFF files if that is what you are running Audacity on, and wanting the 10:1 compression the Mp3 will give you. It is how we got 19+ hours on the CD of albums we burnt(with a little room to spare) ProTools is a freeware for Mac's http://www.digidesign.com/products/details.cfm?template=overview&product_id=2040 Coaster 1.1.3 is another highly recommended ap. http://www.visualclick.de/products/coaster/ Here are some handy sources to look thru: SoundCavern: http://soundcavern.free.fr/freeware/freeware.htm Mac Digital Audio http://www.macdigitalaudio.com/software/?choice=convertingmp3 We've been discussing audio recording in the recent past here and the Wings card as well. The filesharing/server question I'll let the others speak to. I'd like to know more about that myself as I want to network my G3, 6400, PC, and laptop together so I could use any one at a time online or transfer files between the PC, laptop, or Mac's. I'm using a dialup and know my ISP only allows for one box online at a time. Hope this helps Doug. Sorry the other one got lost in cyberspace. Joel You will hear about Roxio, Cakewalk, Nero, and some others and can find them with Google or over at eBay. I don't think they are freewares. --- joel wheeler <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > I posted a reply to Doug's response, but it didn't > seem to get thru either.
