The limitation is in the DRAM controller chip, which is common to all Beige 
machines, including the server.

This chip is fussy as to single/double sided SDRAM and low/high density chips.

768 MB is the max, period.

Although all sticks have an EPROM, some sticks will be read as one-half of 
their actual capacity.

In such a case, that stick type is said to be "incompatible" with the Beige 
machine, period.
