Using Eudora 6.0.1, G3 MT, 512 MB RAM, OS 9.2.2, 56K dial up.
Eudora runs very slow, so slow that I have to wait for the screen to catch up to my two finger keyboarding. All other applications run in normal fashion, including Netscape. There is no modem activity while Eudora is slowly trying to open a message.
A number of things can slow Eudora. For me, the biggie is Mood Watch. In addition to watching what you type, it runs in the background, evaluating *every* message in *every* mailbox. Also try turning off automatic spell checking.
There may be a few other settings that can be changed, that are reached/viewed with the Esoteric Settings plug-in. The plug-in is included in the Extra Plugins folder. Move it into Eudora Stuff then quit and relaunch Eudora.
I have flushed out a lot of old messages,
Good. Fragmented mailboxes can cause bogs. Make sure you compact those mailboxes.
Note that Eudora always has In, Out, and Trash mapped (occupying RAM). So keeping them reasonably sized greatly improves performance. If you're the type that keeps hundreds or thousands of messages in In, then you'll need to allocate more memory to Eudora.
reset the PRAM, rebuilt the Desktop
Why? The PRAM holds parameters used during boot. They have nothing to do with Eudora (or most other apps) performance. The desktop databases are only used by the Finder. If the Finder is functioning normally, then rebuilding it is a waste of time.
