Well, I wish I could MAKE my Mac work like that. I'd LOVE a silent startup.
I hate the big semi-musical crash or boom that accompanies the startup of
this G4-733 running OS 9.2.2. Sometimes when I get up early in the morning
ahead of the rest of the family, I don't want to wake up anybody who's
still sleeping, but when I start up the Mac it's like banging a big gong on
them.

Anybody know how to turn the startup "chime" OFF?

Use 'sleep' rather than turning it off - it's good for them anyway according to Apple. I never turn my iMac or my G3 off. Then again I do have an unusually high tolerance for noise while I'm sleeping!
