I figured this may be the case, that the mouse is more functional in OSX and
less keyboard keys are needed. But I didn't know for sure, so I wanted to
ask before I jumped in head first. You guys know that there are a dozen or
so commands/keystrokes/mouse moves that you use ALL the time, the rest you
could probably care less about. That's the way it is in Windows, and I'm
sure to some extent here. Learning those key items saves a BUNCH of time
when you're learning something new.

Coming from a mostly BSD and Windows mixed environment, I totally understand where you're coming from. I felt the same way with my first mac on OS8, then 9, and so forth. Then X came along and many of the shortcuts changed. By that time I'd been using a mac about 2 years off and on. OS X quickly became my OS of choice, even back in the days of .1 (I refused to run it before then). I also quickly realized that I spent just as much time in the GUI in X as I did command line in *nix, and used them in their respective ways in such a seamless way, I never really noticed until your post.

Don't get me wrong, I still use my command keys on a regular basis, but the the new 5 button mouse, I've found it's much easier to copy and paste with the same device I'm using to select text and target windows. In BSD it was a quick alt-Fkey, ctrl-v. In X it's a quick button, move, button. Works in much the same way, just using more movement of my right hand.

Of course, like you said, I know there are plenty of keyboard-centric users, so I may learn something here as well :)

Also, noticing your Linux related posts before, I'd recommend spending some time at http://macosxhints.com . They often have command-line unix'y type tips for guys like us to play with :)

I also think you'll find OS X's ability to make AppleScript and shell scripts work in tandem becomes an endless tool for when you want to get simple things done between the two core aspects of the OS.

Mac OS X: because making Unix user-friendly is easier than debugging Windows.
