Hello Mark,
What model Mac do you have? Presuming you have a G3 or G4, open the case,
and look for a small black (usually) holder with a battery (referred to a
PRAM battery) in it, about the circumference of an AA battery, but much
shorter - a 3.6v Lithium (iirc) battery, that, with the cover off, is very
easy to get at and remove.
Replacements can be had at Radio Shack (though that's a premium price of $10
plus), from anyone who has a spare to sell on the SwapList, or at places
like Macbatteries.com.
If, however, the patient is a G3 powerbook of sorts, well then, that's an
entirely different story!
