tried once with just the OSX HD hooked up, just got the flashing ? that time.
The flashing "?" means that the ROMed bootstrap was unable to find the OS image on the hard drive. IOW, the boot block (which points to that file) is foo on that volume. Might be able to repair it with Norton Utilities, but more likely the entire drive needs its partition map and boot blocks re-written (ie, reformat it).
