Just how does one go about "pinging," a computer? And what information does
one receive from "pinging" and what does one do with it to accomplish what?
A "ping" is a tiny data transmission between computers to make sure they can see each other on the network. Assuming your using OSX? Open the "Network Utility" in the utility folder, select the "Ping"tab and enter the IP address of the computer you want to ping. It will send a series of pings (10 by default) and report back it's success or lack thereof.

Very simple way to trouble shoot connectivity of your LAN.
