Unless it's a truely antique IDE drive, say, 3.5" full height and 20mb, oh, and won't autodetect... then you can't kill it with an attempted lowlevel format. The drive will happily translate any lowlevel access commands to nop's, and do nothing while toggling your ide activity light if pressent.
