Beige Radeon and Display

Ok, I have a Mac edition Radeon 7000 in my Beige running Server 10.3.3. 
 First, when booting, I don't get anything until half way through the 
status bar screen.  Then, The display on the 17" CRT I have hooked up 
is way too dark.  I have the brightness up, tried to do a display 
calibration thing, same though.  My parents also have a beige, and the 
display is also dark although it is running from the built in video.  
Any thoughts? any one notice this??  any fixes?
