it's probably the stupid "macrovision" copy protection which deliberately messes up the
video signal but in a way that most tv sets will compensate for (but it will mess up
the
playback if you run it into a vcr). the video on the dvd doesn't have any distortions,
but a bit set on the disc tells the dvd player to add these distortions. if you do a
google search you'll find that this "feature" can be disabled on many dvd players with
a
little soldering. otherwise, i'd say get a dvd drive for the g3 if/when you can afford
it, they are getting cheaper and when played on a computer you benefit from the added
resolution on some dvd's. i watch dvd's on a g4 sometimes with a 21" monitor at a high
resolution and it's much, much better than watching it on a tv. the other "fix" would
be
what's called a "dc restoration" circuit, but i don't know of any one who makes a
commercial unit for that other than maybe some video signal processors/enhancers. best
bet is to mod the dvd player if you are technically inclined, if not try and get a
player
for the mac. sorry about the bad news, hollywood has really, really gone overboard
with
copy protection and frankly hurt themselves more than they've helped. even on a tv the
macrovision causes a significant loss of picture quality. the only other thing to
check
would be the cables as a bad cable or dirty connector can cause substantial signal
problems.
