of course it could be done, but that would be providing good customer service.
software
makers stop making old versions not because it isn't profitable (after it's developed
the
production cost is trivial), but rather to force obsolescence through one more
mechanism.
after all, when you can no longer get an os for an old machine, or can't buy an older
version of an application you're forced to buy a new system and/or software, making the
vendors winners and you losers.

frankly, it's an abuse of the copyright system when people refuse to sell articles that
would be profitable just to force users to buy newer and more expensive versions, with
features most users have no need for. tragically, as usual microsoft has been
"innovative" in this area, and other vendors have followed suit. and yet they'll sue
you
for pirating software that can't be purchased, and try to collect it's value anyway
despite their failure to provide media and the basic manuals. distributing old code
doesn't cost much, considering most software companies don't provide any free support
anyway (or even paid in many cases).

we are tragically a throw away society, it's criminal to throw out as many manufactured
goods as we do, even "little" things like cigarette lighters. take a spent bic lighter
apart some time, the parts are still good and would last a long time, if only you could
refill them. but instead we put high grade plastic, chromed metal, springs etc. into
the
landfill where it's useless. all in the name of convenience and so you don't have to
worry about losing a slightly more expensive refillable lighter. sadly the computer
hardware and software vendors work under the same theory, and the classic business
model
where one maximizes company profits, not value, quality or service, and it's all
possible
because most other vendors do the same thing making it nearly impossible for a
consumer to
be responsible in many cases.
