I've also used OpenOffice on the PC to successfully retrieve MS Word files that became corrupted, so give it a go.
I've installed OpenOffice 1.0.3 on Panther even though it does use Mac X11. If you can't download it look out for magazines that feature it, since this is how I came across the Mac version, as I have been using OpenOffice/StarOffice for 5 years now.
