Ziff upgrade software

I bought a G3/450 Ziff upgrade from a supplier and did not get any 
software with it. I see on the SWAP list that people are selling 
upgrades and either include the software or say they don't. Do I need 
software for my upgrade. I am not using it because it does not work 
very well. Could that be the reason? My G3 barely works at the best of 
times anyway.
