A beige G3 would allow him to keep his peripherals without much trouble.  You could 
also get him an iMac, but you would have to get an adapter for the peripherals, and 
you would be stuck with a 15" monitor.  If either of you have plans to continue to 
upgrade the box, a B&W would be the better way to go, since the same upgrades (ram, 
drives, cards) would cost the same, and go further in the B&W.
