Need help with a G4 Yikes Please.
I finally graduated to a G4 and now can't use it. ;-(
This is a Yikes 350 UPGRADED with a Sonnet to 500 Mhz.
Please would someone help with these questions:
1 - video connector: Need one with a small male and bigger female. Does anyone know part number. No one at the store seems to know what I'm talking about. My monitor is ancient. It has the bigger male (with pins) that fits into the G3 MT just fine.
This is a VGA to Mac adapter, they should be readily available. You need to specify that you want to connect a Mac monitor to a VGA output.
Now - I need an adaptor for the Yikes. The adaptor I have - has a small female (small - same as on the back of the Yikes) and a larger male. NOT what is needed.
This is a Mac to VGA connector, which as you've guessed, is the opposite. This would let you hook up a VGA monitor to your old beige.
2. External boot ? The info says - the Yikes will NOT boot from an external Fire Wire. The Sonnet SCSI card that I got to run my old external HD - says it will NOT boot the Yikes. Is there anything EXTERNAL that will boot Yikes ? I get nevous thinking about running the Yikes with NO escape - if it decides not to boot from the internal HD.
Put in another internal HDD, use it for a backup.
3. How far can Yikes be upgraded - Mhz ??? Is 500 Mhz the upper limit ? Will any thing else - the 800's or ??? work ?
Sonnet makes a 1 ghz upgrade for them IIRC.
4. HD's How big HD's will it take ? Is there a limit ? Can it run two 160's or 200's ?
the MB is limited to 132 MB drives. To use larger ones you will need to buy a ATA card.
5. DVD-CDRW Can someone recommend one that will work well in Yikes? And - good burning software ?
The best is the Pioneer DVD-RW/CD-RW, aka the Superdrive.
6. Ether cable Can the Yikes be connected to a G3 MT with an Ether cable ? I have a Belkin#R7J304, 24 AWG. TYPE CM-E178882 VERIFIED CAT 5 PATCH left over from who knows when. Will that work ?
Yes it should. Start the Yikes first then the Beige. You may have to switch Appletalk off of the printer or modem port.
Would connecting them by USB be better ? How ?
No that wont work.
7. How else can I connect both machines ? Should they be plugged into a router or ??? Which would be good ?
Either one is good. a router takes some of the hassle out of the process.
8. Panther I would like to try Panther on Yikes ? Does it run well ?
Absolutely. It runs quite well.
Hints, comments, suggestions appreciated.
9. Record streaming audio Anyone know a good - preferably free - app that will record streaming audio on the Yikes ?
Wiretap, from Ambrosia Software <http://www.ambrosiasw.com/utilities/freebies/>
It's for talk - not music - so I don't need all those great base tones etc. that music people love.
10. Video card Does Panther require a better video card than the standard 128(?) that came with the Yikes 350 ?
That card is anemic, though Panther will work just fine. The Yikes is a PCI video system so the Mac Radeon is pretty much the only solution for video upgrades. Fortunately, it's also a pretty good solution. I like mine a lot.
