Do I need Xpostfacto to install 10.1 on my beige G3 MT?
No, only to install 10.3 or later
Also, do I need tons of RAM?
OS X can run in 128 meg, but very painfully. It needs 256 minimum and up to the max of 768 meg is the best option, depending upon what you do.
Also, X is much finickier than 9 as to marginal memory. So memory that was fine in 9 may give you problems in X. Generally, larger/newer memory is fine, but if you have 3 16meg sticks in your beige, don't even think about trying to install X.
How big a HD do I need?
OS X needs at least 2G free to install. just remember that the beiges have a problem when you use an ata disk. That is that if your disk is larger than 8G, you MUST partition it with the first partition being no larger than 8G (mine was 7.8G)
I need to do this ASAP.
Take your time with the install and you should be fine.
Any help through the maze appreciated.
Can you get a copy of OS 10.2? It is much more usable and more of a finished product than 10.1. It will also install on a beige with out the help of xpostfacto.
While it is a good idea to install OS X on as close to a stock machine as possible, here are the specs on my beige MT when I made the upgrade from 9 to 10.2:
OWC G4 533 (I needed to get Cache enabler software for the G4 to work correctly after I installed X)
Ahard ATA 133 card with a IBM 80G HD partitioned to 7.8G, 60G, and 12.2G and put X on the 7.8G
Radeon 7000, but used the onboard video during the install
768 meg ram from OWC
Orig cd rom (used for the install)
Toshiba DVD/cdrw combo drive
My first install was a frustrating failure. I would get hard system freezes every 10-20 minutes. Not a kernel panic, just a complete system freeze up. The second install went fine and I have had no problems at all, even after using Carbon Copy Cloner to clone me disk to a 160G then moving that disk into a G4 533 Digital Audio.
