What were the first two names used for OS X?

Cougar!

Isn't that a form of Jaguar and smaller than a Tiger?

Nope, a Cougar is the only native North American big cat*, sometimes called a Panther, sometimes a Mountain Lion, sometimes a Puma, though it is not to be confused with the old world Panther.

*Jaguars have been seen as far north as southern New Mexico and Arizona, but whether their native range extended this far north or they were just transient is a matter of dispute.
