What is the best way to remove fonts to GAIN disk space?

Delete them; drag 'em to the trash. But, if you're deleting fonts to gain disk space, just break down and get a bigger disk, unless you have thousands of them...or lots of asian fonts, which are a lot larger. ~10 MB versus 100-200K for western fonts.

If you're using OS X then there are a number of places fonts may reside: (~ is a unix shortcut meaning 'the logged on user's directory'

/Library/Fonts
~/Library/Fonts
/System/Library/Fonts <---DON'T mess with these or you'll break OS X.
/System Folder/Fonts <--OS 9 fonts.

Adobe likes to hide fonts in

~/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Fonts
