Did you try the new drives in the same position as the old drive, or as additional drives? They have to be jumpered (or not), for Master or Slave, depending on the presence or absence of other drives on the same cables.
Web sites for the various brands of drives normally show jumper settings, and often, they are shown on the drives themselves.
