I sweated bullets with disk utilities trying to fix the problem but in the end wipe and restore worked.
After the restore of OS 10.3.4, the booted panther gives you with a splash screen greeting you like a new user. So I found I had to go thru that with a minimum of name entering to the OS X desktop. Then I logged out and walla, there was my original account. Then I could log into that and get my regular desktop and be happy.
