The B&W has a 66 MHz onboard IDE controller. That is the bottle neck. I use
a 40 Gig - 133MHz ATA Interface and a 2MB onboard buffer. But it runs at the
66 MHz IDE controller speed of the B&W. The bigger the Cache on a drive the
better but if you want to save a couple of bucks skip the 8MB buffer. The
IDE controller on the B&W is the bottle neck. Pick up a Sonnet 133 MHz IDE
controller or 166 MHz SATA controller for your Mac and you will want the 8
MB Cache.

The Rev 2 is all set to install a second IDE drive. Set the Jumper to
"SLAVE" on the second drive. Verify the jumper is set to "MASTER" On the
primary drive and plug it in. The Rev2 has room for a total of 4 internal
drives.

I hope this helps

Subject: New HD ? for B&W G3 Rev.2

I'd like to get a second internal HD for the B&W G3 which has an
internal 9GB SCSI drive, and it seems to make sense to get an ATA one
since it will be more readily future compatible.

---What is the advantage of one with a 8 MB data buffer over one with
a 2MB data buffer?

---The manual has instructions only for the addition of a SCSI drive,
where it has you unplug both power and ribbon cables before adding a
drive. Is that necessary when adding an ATA drive?

---Do all B&W G3s have a drive carrier retainer, that the manual
says to remove in preparation for the installation of a new HD? I
can't see one in this B&W G3.
