I give this advice to anyone who's planning on installing it. Be sure to boot off your Panther CD first, and repair the
Boot Disk, followed by repairing disk permissions.
DO THIS BEFORE YOU INSTALL THE UPDATE!
After you install the update, be sure to boot off the CD
one more time, and run disk permissions once again.

How does one repair permissions ?

It's in OS X's Disk Utility. Highlight the OS X partition and then open the 'First Aid' tab in the panel on the right. At the bottom is a button for 'Repair Permissions'.

Please note, as someone pointed out to me a few months back, you do not need to boot from a CD to repair the permissions alone in OS X (you do to check and Repair drives though). It's something you can do in the background while you work if you want.

Also, FWIW I have never taken this precaution while installing Mac OS X Updates and have not had problems with them failing. I close all Apps and leave the update to install, then reboot straight away. I am lucky enough to have 2 machines running 10.3.x on my desk so it is not a problem for me to stop working on one to install an update :o)
