Matthew,
Quoting from Apple Error Codes at:
http://WWW.Appleerrorcodes.com/
ID=02 Address Error The Motorola 68000 microprocessor can access memory in increments of one byte (8 bits), one word (16 bits), or one long word (32 bits). The microprocessor can access a byte of information at an odd or even memory address. But it must access a word or long word at an even memory address. So, when the microprocessor attempts to read or write a word or long word at an odd address, you see this error. Since that's a 50/50 proposition when running random code, this one shows up quite often.
I'm not sure how much of that applies since you are not using a 68xxx processor. I had to reinstall Excel due to numerous crashes. I'd try reinstalling it again, and then immediately after the install, run Office 2001 Combo Update 9.0.4 available from the Mactopia section of the Microsoft site. FWIW, I have 604 MB of installed RAM, VM off, and Excel's memory set at 32MB.
Incidentally did you remove the Microsoft folder and Microsoft Office Settings from the Preference Folder? Don't trash them. They contain your custom toolbars etc. Just put them on the desktop, restart, and see if the problem repeats.
After you reboot, and try launching Excel a bunch of new stuff will be created in its place. If you still have the same problem, throw out the new preferences, and replace your old ones, so that you retain all your custom settings.
Hope this helps, Maaki

New to this list as of today.
Bought 1.25 Ghz G4 a few months ago then installed Office 2001 Gold for the Mac. Word works perfectly. Excel causes an "error of type two" each time I launch. Have increased memory allotment from around 9Mb to 22Mb. No change. Deleted all references to Excel off of computer and reinstalled this morning. No change.
Computer has 1.04G RAM, OS 9.2.2, and VM is on
Suggestions? (other than "upgrade to OSX", that's not helpful).
