I agree with your comments about Linksys. Good products and you can find them on eBay pretty cheap.
I have a BEFSR11 10/100 one-port router feeding 3-EZXS55W 5-port switches on my home network, supporting a collection of Macs and peecees.
Rock solid and nary a glitch.

I'm real partial to Linksys SD series 10/100 switches. Auto sensing, relatively inexpensive, goo tech support. They comes in 5, 8 and 16 port versions. We use them with a very mixed LAN of Mac's peecees and one tired old Unix box. They work great.

If you're looking for gigabit ethernet switches? I have no suggestions.
