You might try doing an "Erase and Install" Although that did not work for me, I read some stuff on Apple's web site to that effect. At one point it would let me install OS 10.2, but not any of the software updates. Never did figure that out. And, definitely make the first partition (if you are using a larger drive) LESS than 8GB. Apple says that OSX must go in the first 8GB, but the AIO seems to want something slightly less than that.
I have tried three different hard drives in the one I am working on. It did not like a 14 GB Maxtor or a 14GB Western Digital. It seems relatively happy with a 20GB Seagate.
I have also found two other tidbits that cause problems in the one I am working on: (1) Don't allow any software, such as Palm Desktop to put anything in the Login Items. You can not actually stop it from installing the login items stuff, but you should immediately delete/remove the items after the installation. (2) Uncheck the box for "Connect automatically when needed" in the Network settings for a dial up modem.
I still don't have the AIO totally functional and stable. There is some light at the end of the tunnel, but it still blinks off and on from time to time.

Are you using an OEM install cd? Or a computer specific? I.E. Imac?
I have a bunch of Molars (no teeth jokes, please), and have installed OS 9.1 onto all of them so far. Except one. One Molar refused to accept the OS 9.1 installation, at the get-go ("...will not work on this computer"). And an OS 9.0.4 install was similarly rejected.
So I put 8.5 on it. And it went in fine.
What reason could there be for this G3 not taking what other, seemingly
identical G3s, took with no problems?
I have some 266MHz Molars, too; they all took 9.1 just fine, also.
