I have just "installed" my Gyration wireless keyboard/mouse. I thought this would allow me to leave the stock keyboard connected and use it as a USB hub. I tried connecting my Canon LiDE30 scanner to it, but when I tried to scan I got messages such as "not enough power" and "no scanner attached".

Can the kb be used as a hub for lower-powered peripherals?

Yes it can, but under no stretch of the imagination is the LIDE 30 'lower-powered'. It will run off of the USB bus, but the keyboard bus is far more restrictive than a powered usb hub like the external ones or the ports on the motherboard.

I routinely connect flash drives to my keyboard (making all the PeeCee users who see it envious that it's so handy) but even those can strain it. A professor got a Sandisk Cruzer Mini 256 megabyte stick to plug into his G4 tower.

My older model Cruzer 256 works in that keyboard port, but the newer ones pull more current, apparently, because they won't work there. He ended up getting a powered hub and using that.
