Is there a limit on USB hubs?

I have a 5 port usb and firewire card in my B&W and today, I tried to 
add an external 4-port D-Link USB hub. My B&W had kniptions. Everytime I 
plugged something in I would get a dialogue box saying that a device 
attached to the usb port was drawing too much power. I had the d-link 
plugged in with the adapter that came with it. Using OS X 10.35, 512K 
memory. Tried plugging the hub into both the card and the stock usb 
ports. Same thing happened.
Any ideas?
