I don't know what software you're using to ping. I use Mac TCP Watcher on OS 9.2.2 when I need to ping. It has two options basically: to send 10 pings and stop; to ping continuously. The latter option pings in the background as long as the software is running. The other side should ping back as it receives each ping. For this reason, you should choose an IP number you know for sure will stay up all the time. That's all there is to it, as far as my knowledge goes on the subject.


I have never noticed any  bad side effects on performance.
