How could I resist plugging away at this futile
gadget?

This morning I tried using X-PostFacto to start
installing either Jaguar or Panther, this method is
supposed to boot one off of OS X files on one's OS 9
hard drive (in OS X), and then install the CD from
there. No such luck, I was no able to get my mac to
restart to the XPF Jaguar files.

Something which really puzzles me: Since it seems that
the Open Firmware name for my DVD-ROM drive is
"ide/@0:0" , it was obvious that I'd try this as the
boot-device variable. When I do, the "BOOT" command
yields:
"BOOT mac-parts: no bootable HFS partition"
The drive does start reading when I tell it to boot
from there. I have tried many other partition numbers
besides zero.

What I'd need though would not be the package
"mac-parts", but rather "xcoff-loader"! When I try to
check out "dev /[EMAIL PROTECTED] ls" I see the node
children, but I can't "dev" to them. "dev
/[EMAIL PROTECTED]" doesn't work, yet this package was
just open when I tried booting! AIIEEE!!!! So if I
can't jump to the appropriate node, how am I supposed
to check its properties?

Likewise, my earlier line of inquiry was whether or
not I had the OF drive path correct. I could "dev
/[EMAIL PROTECTED]/[EMAIL PROTECTED] ", but when I tried to go
further I could only access certain things. Why could
I not "dev /[EMAIL PROTECTED]"? I could not "dev heathrow-ata"
either. But I CAN "dev ide/@0:0"! So WTF? Why can't I
access these things by their proper node names and
aliases? It's like my machine is not ever certain what
its own devices are.

Maybe I am overlooking obvious things out of simple
newbie ignorance, if so I apologize. But I find only a
little bit of info online about the use of
OpenFirmware for macs, and what I am experiencing
really does not jive with the not-so-thorough material
I have read. The pamphlets on "Fundamentals of Open
Firmware" are aimed at developers for hardware
drivers. The full ISO specification is way too terse
for me to understand.

Enough for now...
