Flaky FW ports? OWC sells a 2-port FW card for $10, might be worth getting one to test. That's only for the 400 drive, unless the 800 drives have 400 ports too.

Flaky cables? (My cats love to gnaw on computer cables. I have a SCSI cable at home that looks like it's been used as a bulletin board it's got so many little holes in it. Needless to say, it doesn't work as a SCSI cable any more...) if they're daisy chained all it takes is one to go bad.

flaky exclosures or cabling in the exclosure?

Don't get me wrong I love OWC for many things, but I don't think that I'd recommend their house brand external cases anymore. I've had to troubleshoot one too many external HD issues over the phone for friends after recommending their external boxes. This was SCSI cases but it was consistent enough that I'm thinking extra hard about going with their "Mercury" exclosures, and paying more $ for a mainstream case for myself.

I do see a USB/firewire external drive in my near future though.

I would call their sales line (waiting for tech issues can be long) and lodge your issue NOW, and get the name etc. of the person you are speaking with. And then confirm by writing. Based on my experiences.

People can post all they like with happy stories, and I do like the company, but those external SCSI boxes caused me a bit of grief and OWC was not super about sending replacements. I've not yet forgotten.

This is assuming that those very cost effective "Mercuries" are indeed a house brand :) after all. I myself have not seen them elsewhere anyway.
