--- You wrote: can I use a USB2 card in my beige system running OSX.2.8 and 9? --- end of quote --- There are no drivers for usb 2 in os 9 so it won't work on any Mac. Usb 2 is supported in X at about 10.2.8 and beyond, if I remember correctly. But some usb 2 cards won't run on a Beige since the bus speed is too low. These specify B&W or later. I have a card that is supposed to work in a Beige, but I've had reliability problems. It's a firewire/usb2 card and the Firewire is fine. So is usb 1.
Some usb 2 peripherals are cheaper than the firewire versions (card readers, for example) but there are firewire versions of most peripherals that are also available in usb 2. That said, I've been having trouble with my Firewire CF card reader lately. Locks up. Can't figure it out. May be os 10.3.5? Worked ok in 4?
