You can if you use a shareware called "Konfabulator" that uses widgets of
all sorts.  There are widgets that do just that: monitor your email account
and tell you if you have any (then you click on the widget and the email
program of your choice opens). By the way, Apple is SO plagiarizing this
shareware with their "Dashboard" for Tiger.
