I'm currently using a Swann MacSurfer USB modem and connecting at 50666 speeds 99.9% of the time (very occassionally connect at 48k, so just reconnect). I have found it to be a very good modem but need to get hold of another one and found that the maker of it no longer sells a Mac version. I never thought to look around for a second hand one. But your post put me of a mind to do that, thanks. Just FYI the modem's internals are based on the Atlas modem board and the manufacturer used to have a downloadable script for MacOS X.

Oops I am wrong I just found that they are selling Mac USB modems (dunno what website I was looking at!).

Anyway here is the link if anyone is interested.

The modems tend to be on the expensive side but the performance in very good, so a second hand one would serve you well.

Thanks for all comments on this query.

There are no PCI modems for Macs that I have ever seen.

Your B&W uses a special internal 56k modem that is not a PCI card but
was made for the B&W and also the Yikes G4 I think. The modems are
cheap and plentiful on the used market at about $20.00 and they work
pretty well. I can get 46-48 speeds on the B&W internal modem on the
same lines my PTP external US Robotics 56k only gets 33 at best,
ever....

Downloads are about 4-6kbs on the B&W modem and about 2-3kbs on the US
Robotics.

Your other options are:

1. A USB modem - Sorry don't know anything about them but with OSX it
should be a no brainer to use.

2. A USB to Serial adapter to attach a serial external modem to the USB
port. (costs about as much as the B&W modem)

If you download the Apple manual it will show how to install the modem.
It's an easy 1 minute job.

Ron

Hi all.

Does anyone know of an internal 56k modem PCI card that they would
recommend and that will work and has scripts for OS 10.3.5?
Failing that can anyone recommend a external USB modem for use with OS
X? Obviously would prefer a PCI card since I have the space free.

I know ADSL is the way to go but am limited to modem access for the
mean time.

My system:
B&W rev2, Encore/Ziff 1Ghz G4, 640Mb RAM, ATI Rage 128

Thanks for any help/advice
