Have you tried unplugging and reconnecting hardware? When I can't get programs to run 
peripherals or to force quit when they're stuck, unplugging USB or FireWire or 
Ethernet* or phone* connections often gets things happy again for me. 

*I've read instructions that say to shut everything down with ethernet or modems, but 
I don't shutdown my Powerbook when I take it places, just unplug all tethers, close 
the lid and go. Haven't had a problem; am I looking for one? Thought things might be 
different in OSX.
