>What is the largest HD you can have in a B&W running System 9.x >without installing a PCI card?
Two answers, both correct: 1) 120 GB, using the on-motherboard UATA controller, and 2) as large as your can find, 250 GB, at least, using an ACARD SCSI-IDE "bridge" on the drive, and a supported SCSI card, ATTO, for example; with the implicit assumption that the "PCI card" mentioned in the question was a UATA card and not a SCSI card. (1) is a consequence of lack of 48-bit LBA support in the motherboard. (2) is a consequence of the 48-bit LBA support which was added to the ACARD "bridge" product. Normally, UATA/133 support and 48-bit LBA support go hand-in-hand. And, they normally do, in UATA PCI cards. However, in the "bridge" product, 48-bit LBA was added independently of UATA/133. In fact, although the "bridge" supports UATA/33, UATA/66, UATA/100 and UATA/133 drives, it also has a 40 MB/sec maximum internal transfer rate. Other versions of the "bridge" product are available, the LVD/SE ones in particular, which have a higher internal transfer rate. There are LVD/SE, UW-SCSI and F-SCSI versions of the "bridge" product, supporting 68-pin LVD/SE drives, 68-pin UW-SCSI drives, and 50-pin F-SCSI drives, respectively. So, even a Beige or a 9600 or a 8600 or a 7300 (or less), or even a B&W (with a SCSI card) can be configured to support any capacity drive. -- G-List is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
