IMO - AOL might have safeguards, but that adds another $25 or so to your monthly bill. Today's kids are not dumb and they will find a way around the safeguards.
Get a software package that tracks the keystrokes and monitor where your child has been visiting.
This way your child can use the internet and you have a record of where he goes or does. Respecting your child's privacy does not mean that they can "see" whatever they want.
If he visits sites that you have not pre-approved as suitable subject matter, ground him from the computer/video games/TV completely for "x" number of days. This rule should also apply if the log file is missing or has been altered from his visits on the internet
He is reaching the age that he needs to understand there are consequences for his actions when using his own free will. This lesson is very valuable for when he turns into an adult.
