The "t" might be silent in American jargon but I can assure that in
English as spoken in its mother tongue, the "t" is definitely not
silent.    It is not pronuonced "offen" in the countries where most
English is spoken as a mother-tongue, namely, UK, Australia, New
Zealand, Canada, even though these countries have a much smaller
combined population that the US.

As an aside, it is estimated that English in the US will be superceded
by Spanish within 15 years as the most used language.   In this event,
does it really matter that it is pronounced "offen" or "often"? :-)

It's accepted that, even though the US probably has the largest number
of individual users of email, the American use of English grammar varies
so widely from region to region and individual to individual, that one
could probably surmise that there is no set standard of grammar use in
this medium.
