One further point.
I presume that your G4 iBook has an Airport Extreme card to give you 11g
speed but the G3 iMac is limited to 11b if it has an original Airport card.
To get 11g on you iMac I guess you would need an 'ethernet to wireless
bridge' box.

I have a beige G3 with 10.2.6 directly wired to the WAP (a 45$ Belkin
11g Router) that also lets me connect a g4 iBook (Panther) and a g3
iMac (10.2.8) wirelessly. I know nothing about networks but between the
manual and one call to my brother-in-law who said "use the wizard on
the CD even though it says 'PC-only'" I got the thing set up.
