(I apologize for this extremely long reply. I just hope it is helpful)
Ok let's look at this for a second. First of all you should know that a
print cartridge's page yield is measured at 5% page coverage, the
accepted standard of a single page of text.
The Canon i350 (Canon's site didn't list the i250) is $49. It along with
the i250 uses a BCI-24BK Black cartridge and a BCI-24C Color Cartridge.
Also the printer has non replaceable heads so when they wear out you
will need to buy a new printer.
The BCI-24BK has a page yield of 150 pages and costs $9.
$9 / 150 pages = $0.060 per page
The BCI-24C has a page yield of 270 pages, assuming you use each of the
colors at the same rate (it holds 90 pages per color) and costs $19
$19 / 270 pages = $0.070 per page
The Canon iP3000 $99 and iP4000 $149 use the BCI-3eBk Black cartridge
and the BCI-6C (Cyan), BCI-6M (Magenta), and BCI-6Y (Yellow) Color
Cartridges. This printer also has permanent heads.
The BCI-3eBk has a page yield of 420 pages and costs $14.
$14 / 420 pages = $0.033 per page
The color cartridges cost $11 a piece and have a page yield of 280
pages. Each can be replaced individually but for this comparison we are
going to treat them as a single cartridge that costs $33 and has a page
yield of 840 pages.
$33 / 840 pages = $0.039 per page
Now for the HP printers. HP printers have the advantage of the heads
being built-in to the cartridges so you replace them each time you get a
new cartridge.
The HP DeskJet 3740 costs $40. It uses the HP 27 black cartridge and
the HP 28 color cartridge. It is compatible with OS 9.1+ and X 10.1.5+,
10.2.3+, and 10.3.x.
The HP 27 has a page yield of 220 pages and costs $18.
$18 / 220 pages = $0.081 per page
The HP 28 has a page yield of 190 pages (63 per color) and costs $22.
$22 / 190 pages = $0.116 per page
The HP DeskJet 5150 costs $90. It uses the HP 56 black cartridge and
the HP 57 color cartridge. It is compatible with OS 8.6, 9.X, and X 10.1
or higher.
The HP 56 has a page yield of 450 pages and costs $20.
$20 / 450 pages = $0.044 per page
The HP 57 has a page yield of 400 pages (133 per color) and costs $35.
$35 / 400 pages = $0.088 per page
The HP DeskJet 6540 costs $150. It uses the HP 96 black cartridge and
the HP 97 color cartridge. It also will take the 94/95 cartridges which
have half the ink. It is compatible with OS 9.1+ and X 10.1.5+,
10.2.3+, and 10.3.x
The HP 96 has a page yield of 800 pages and costs $30.
$30 / 800 pages = $0.038 per page
The HP 97 has a page yield of 450 pages (150 per color) and costs $35.
$35 / 450 pages = $0.078 per page
Now quick look at a couple lasers.
The HP LaserJet 1012 costs $200. It uses the HP 12A toner cartridge. It
is compatible with OS 9.1 and higher and OS X 10.1 and higher.
$70 / 2000 pages = $0.035
The HP LaserJet 1150 costs $300. It uses the HP Q2624X toner cartridge.
It is compatible with OS 9.1 and higher and OS X 10.1 and higher.
$91 / 4000 pages = $0.023
The HP LaserJet 1300 costs $400. It uses the HP Q2613X toner cartridge.
It is compatible with OS 9.1 and higher and OS X 10.1 and higher.
$91 / 4000 pages = $0.023
