General comment in re: FLASHers ...

Some will indeed work with a "blank" ROM, which, by definition, is a
device in which *every* location is X'FF'.

Some intentionally read the device ID before FLASHing, and will reject
the device if it is not the same ID as the card was originally built with.

Promise and others use this technique to prevent "diversion" of PC cards
to Mac use, and Mac cards to PC use.

The FLASHer simply reads the ROM's ID, and if it is not, say, a Winbond
1024 K chip, the FLASH will be aborted, whereas if it is, say, a CSI 1024
K chip, the FLASH will proceed.

In all other respects, a 1024 K chip is a 1024 K chip is a 1024 K chip.

Well, the FLASHer actually needs to know the ID as the programming
algorithms may be different between the, say, Winbond and CSI chips.

But the real reason for the difference is prevention of diversion.

So ...

When replacing a 64 kbyte chip with a 126 kbyte chip, it may be
significant to install the same brand and part number (which collectively
contribute to the chip's ID) as the FLASHer was designed to accept.
