You didn't say what OS you're using so I'll assume it's OSX. You need to go to Finder > Preferences and click on the advanced pane. From there, click on "languages for searching file contents" and select only the language(s) you use. By default, I think it is set to index between ten and twenty different languages which would slow things considerably.
How would it be done (if possible) in 9.2?
Sherlock. It's set to index volumes by default. Runs in the background. It's that annoying extra disk activity that runs when you think your Mac should be idle. And it's crashy... My experience has been that turning it off greatly increases the classic Mac OS' stability.
If the system isn't allowed to index itself, I'm sure files will become misplaced, and eventually everything may break down.
See Bruce's reply.
The basic file system indices (desktop database, alloc tables, b-trees, etc) are maintained "live" "on the fly", as you create, move, and delete files. They track where files are located on a disk volume.
This thread is talking about the secondary *artificial* index created by things like Sherlock to make searching for specific text strings _within_ files faster.
I think this may in part be why I was having so much trouble with my 9600. Since installing the same HD in this b&w (after a system reinstall) it starts indexing every couple of days, taking about half an hour. No signs of the 9600 gremlins reappearing. So far...
If you don't use Sherlock's text searching functions, turn the indexing off. Or at the minimum, turn it off for the volumes on which you don't search.
