unfortunately, the depth of field is dependent on the design of the optics, and won't be something you can adjust. remember most people don't scan 3 dimensional objects but just surfaces of pages etc. if you have a need for this, i'd definitely try a scanner before i bought it, which is a good idea any way since it seems that most or all of the scanner companies have made some bad ones. it's really sad that companies with good products will sell things that turn out to have major design problems just because they've invested in the design, you'd think they'd realize that a good reputation is worth more than recovering the design cost on a bad product.
