I have two OS 9 Macs on a network with 8 other OS X Macs and a couple of PCs. Every now and then the OS 9 computers loose there Internet connection and cannot receive emails.
Hate it when that happens. :)
Please elaborate on "cannot receive emails". Are they suddenly having problems translating the mail server's name to an IP address (DNS failure)? Or are the Macs unable to communicate at a (lower) tcp level or ?
They are still visible on the network
Define "visible"? Do you mean their volumes are still viewable via File Sharing from other Macs? Is that regular AppleTalk or over IP? Or do you mean that they respond to pings or ? Can they still access other computer's shared volumes? IOW, is this a TCP/IP failure only or has AppleTalk died too?
and if I boot into X the Internet works fine
So it's probably not a NIC, cable, or switch problem.
If I change the IP address the connection returns, but its only a few Hrs and its gone again, change the IP address back and it returns.
+/- how you define "connection", it sounds like a DHCP problem. The lease isn't renewing so the all IP activity becomes blocked. Use a tool such as IPNetMonitor to view your current lease.
Make sure you don't have any firewall software on the Mac blocking the lease renewal.
...You need to dig deeper and describe exactly what is failing at what level; application vs network. Use a tool such as WhatRoute or IPNetMonitor to poke around. Ping yourself. Ping a local Mac. Ping your gateway. Ping your mail server. Trace to your mail server. Try translating names, etc.
In the mean time, something to try: Quit all tcp-based apps (email, browser, etc). Open the TCP/IP control panel, click on Options, *uncheck* "Load only when needed". Close the cdev. Reach into the system preferences folder and trash the "Open Transport Preferences" folder. Empty the trash. Reboot. See if that improves anything.
