The beige G3 was the first Mac to power up from the keyboard where turning off the computer doesn't turn off power to a monitor or other device connected to the power out plug on the back. Apple reported this as a cost saving measure.
Did Apple *really* have to do this? How much money were they actually saving by such a move?
Sometimes in design, what can seem to be trivial will have huge effects in the end. I don't work at Apple, but I can see how a power supply redesign eliminating this function can save $15 per Mac and that is BIG money in the end.
Also - most modern monitors comply with "EnergyStar" so they use minimal power when asleep. AND many modern monitors are cheap crap - they aren't built to be totally turned on and off that often...
FWIW, - Dan.
