Sometimes in design, what can seem to be trivial will have huge effects in the end. I don't work at Apple, but I can see how a power supply redesign eliminating this function can save $15 per Mac and that is BIG money in the end.

Also - most modern monitors comply with "EnergyStar" so they use minimal power when asleep. AND many modern monitors are cheap crap - they aren't built to be totally turned on and off that often...
