I would have to agree with Bruce. I have been
repressing my own resentment over Office 2004,
although not  successfully.

My best experience has been to turn off the "gallery"
and "notebook" features and use an "alias" for each
Office application, in an Office "Folder",  in the
dock. It will then open up the application in your
selected template style. This is a carryover from my
use of the Windows versions and "right" clicks at
work. 

Give this try and see if you like it better.
