...in part because I've just read "The Second Coming of Steve Jobs,"* which provides an example of another lost opportunity. It seems that before Windows was tolerable much less a market threat, IBM approached Jobs to license his NeXTstep software for PCs. NeXT's OS was way cool - and became the basis, eventually, and by a circuitous route, for the later Mac OS X. But what if NeXTstep had been presented to the world for the PC architecture BEFORE Windows 95 - or (I'm not sure of the timeline, now) - even before Windows 3.x? NeXTstep would have blown Microsoft out of the water, and NeXT would have quickly overshadowed Apple, and probably would have bought it out in short order - giving Jobs his hardware tinkering playground. Alas, Jobs's board was overwhelmingly pro-hardware, too, and so NeXT nixed the 'nix-on-Intel option. Ah, lost opportunities! Hindsight! -- timo * I have a few pristine extra copies of this fascinating (if non-technical) book. I'm going to put them up on my website soon, but really, if anyone wants one now, speak up: My $6.66 special - "The Second Coming of Steve Jobs," hardback with d/j - shipped anywhere in the U.S. for that special price!
