Can anyone confirm that PS 6 will launch into either OS, or if it isn't
6, which version is it?

I'm not sure about 6, but I know PhotoShop 7 can do this. Like you I switch back and forth between OS9 and OSX, and had PhotoShop 5.5 installed for OS9 and PhotoShop 7 for OSX. I was very surprised when I booted in OS9, doubleclicked a PhotoShop document and ended up in PS 7!

Turns out this has to do with the new package-format that Apple introduced with OSX. A program file will look like just that when you use Get Info, but in fact it is a whole folder. Inside is the real programfile, plus the various resources it needs (icon files, user interface layout-files, textfiles for the menues and dialogs (often in several laguages, the right one automatically picked by the system)), functionally the same as the invisible resource-fork of Classic where these things were stored before. The reason for this change is that Mac-files can now be stored using any file system, even those that don't have any resource-fork in their files (that is, all systems except HFS).

Now, these package-folders can also have two versions of the program, one for OSX and one for Classic. Classic in its >9.1 versions also recognize packages, and so OS9 could find and open the Classic version. Neat!
