This is not bad advice...

...and I've used it with profit.

But I routinely ignore it. If the thing you want is an odd one, you
can just low-bid and forget about it. I've received many Mac parts
that way, as well as a lovely edition of one of my favorite novels
(F. Marion Crawford's "A Tale of a Lonely Parish," VG+ condition)
for almost no money.

It depends on how bad you want something. If you would "merely like
to have it," but don't want to spend much money, or spend a lot of
time trying to time a bid, just bid early and low: if you get it,
good; if you don't, no harm - you've just saved some money!
